You can guess what comes next.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The skunk odor hit my nostrils before I saw the yellow markings on his white fur as he ran back to me, yelping. This was my first skunk encounter, and like any pet parent, I thought,&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHow do I get rid of skunk odor?\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since it was 11 p.m. on a frozen winter\u2019s night in Upstate N.Y., there was nothing I could do but&nbsp;take him upstairs and put him in the bath, which was ill-advised.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the time, I wasn\u2019t prepared for a skunk encounter. Here\u2019s how you can be better prepared to get rid of the smell of skunk.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-is-skunk-spray-nbsp\">What Is Skunk Spray?&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">First, you probably know that skunk spray is a defensive mechanism. If skunks feel cornered by a predator, they\u2019ll spray. Your curious pup might be as friendly as a Golden Retriever puppy, but a skunk isn\u2019t out to make friends; they\u2019re probably dumpster-diving and looking for a snack.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Skunks have a \u201cspray first\u201d approach, and you can\u2019t really blame them for following their instincts. Then, your doggy runs to you, yelping, and you have to go into emergency mode to clean them. When you act fast, you reduce your dog\u2019s discomfort.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the book, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com.mx\/books\/edition\/The_First_Aid_Companion_for_Dogs_Cats\/0e8DAAAAQBAJ?hl=en&amp;gbpv=1&amp;dq=how+to+deskunk+your+dog&amp;pg=PA345&amp;printsec=frontcover\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The First Aid Companion for Dogs &amp; Cats<\/a>, author Amy J. Shojai says, \u201cMusk glands on each side of the skunk\u2019s anus have retractable ducts. If a skunk feels fearful, they can raise that fluffy tail, telescope those anal glands and spray their stinky skunk oil.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Their reach is far too.&nbsp;They can spray their stinky skunk odor as much as 15 feet away!&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Skunk spray is a chemical mixture of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smithsonianmag.com\/smithsonian-institution\/ask-smithsonian-what-makes-skunk-spray-smell-so-terrible-180955553\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">thiols<\/a>. According to the Encyclopedia <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/science\/thiol\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Britannica<\/a>, thiols are \u201corganic chemical compounds similar to the alcohols and phenols but containing a sulfur atom in place of the oxygen atom.\u201d<br><br>If skunk smell causes you to wrinkle your nose and hold your breath, imagine what it does to your pup who has a heightened <a href=\"https:\/\/justfoodfordogs.com\/blog\/can-dogs-taste-food.html\">sense of smell<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-a-homemade-solution-for-ridding-your-dog-of-skunk-smell-nbsp\">A Homemade Solution for Ridding Your Dog of Skunk Smell&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"724\" height=\"483\" src=\"https:\/\/osfbl01.justfoodfordogs.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/dog-tub.jpg\" alt=\"dog in tub\" class=\"wp-image-13612\" srcset=\"https:\/\/justfoodfordogs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/dog-tub.jpg 724w, https:\/\/justfoodfordogs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/dog-tub-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 724px) 100vw, 724px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Shojai says, \u201cChemist Paul Krebaum found the answer to skunk odor by figuring out how to change the thiols into other compounds that don\u2019t smell with a homemade solution.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The homemade solution for getting skunk smell off your dog includes:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Hydrogen peroxide<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Baking soda<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Dog shampoo&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mix 1 quart hydrogen peroxide with \u00bc cup of baking soda and a tsp of liquid soap or dog shampoo in a bucket.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With this simple hydrogen peroxide solution, you can wash your dog, work it into his coat, and neutralize the skunk stench. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fortunately, these are easy household items you probably have on hand. However, don\u2019t keep it in a closed container, as the mixture can explode if stored.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-follow-these-steps-for-ridding-your-dog-of-skunk-odor-nbsp\">Follow These Steps for Ridding Your Dog of Skunk Odor&nbsp;<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to the First Aid Companion, you first want to check your dog\u2019s eyes. Skunk spray can burn your pup\u2019s eyes if they take a direct hit like my dog did. Fortunately, skunk spray is stinky but not <a href=\"https:\/\/justfoodfordogs.com\/blog\/what-toxins-can-cause-seizures-in-dogs.html\">toxic<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Clean your dog\u2019s eyes<\/strong>: If you have a saline solution on hand (for example, for contact lens care), you can use it on your dog\u2019s eyes. Otherwise, cup your hand, splash cool water on your dog\u2019s eyes, and wipe them with a dampened cloth. Repeat until your pup\u2019s stress seems reduced.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Wear rubber gloves<\/strong>: Rubber gloves are a good idea to prevent the skunk spray from irritating your skin. Likewise, old clothes are a good idea too. Anything you wear while washing your dog will need immediate laundering.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Scrub<\/strong>: Get rid of the skunk oil by scrubbing your pup. Ideally, you\u2019ll bathe your skunked pup outside, but that&#8217;s not so viable when it\u2019s twenty degrees outside.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Wet your dog\u2019s fur with warm water and work that de-skunking solution into your dog\u2019s fur down to the skin. Let it sit for a few minutes because as it sinks into your dog\u2019s coat, it neutralizes the skunk odor. If you can keep your dog still for ten minutes or even longer, that would be a good thing. Maybe you can distract your dog with delicious treats and a short training session.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes, people refer to the skunk scent as skunk oil, but when it\u2019s on your dog\u2019s coat, it\u2019s not that oily. I don\u2019t recall it having a texture, only a yellow cast on my dog\u2019s white fur. You may see it differently.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-no-tomato-juice-won-t-work\">No, Tomato Juice Won&#8217;t Work<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Urban legend has it that tomato juice is a good de-skunking aid, but anecdotal research says it has minimal success. It may just turn your white dog pink. Likewise, white vinegar doesn\u2019t work well either.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A better method for getting rid of skunk odor is to mix up that DIY home remedy above or keep a good de-skunking <a href=\"https:\/\/justfoodfordogs.com\/blog\/best-dog-shampoo-for-itchy-skin.html\">dog shampoo<\/a> on hand as a skunk odor remover. If you do use the homemade solution, be aware hydrogen peroxide can bleach your dog\u2019s fur.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After the solution sits on your dog\u2019s coat and dog\u2019s skin, you\u2019ll rinse your pup well. Then, you\u2019ll repeat the bathing process with dog shampoo. Finally, you\u2019ll towel dry your dog.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Unfortunately, the skunk scent is powerful, especially if your dog took a direct hit. It can linger in a milder form for days.
